A freak accident. A little girl and her mom say they never expected a family friend's dog to attack.
Dog bite victim Mady Lopez said, "I just pet his back nicely, and he just turned around and bit me."
Mady and her mother, Kim, have had a rough few days. The nine-year-old was standing with her mom in the kitchen Saturday.
Their family friend's Bulldog, Bubba, had his paws on the kitchen counter. Mady was petting Bubba's back when he turned and bit her in the face.
Mady says, "My lip was hanging right there and then this one doesn't really hurt. It doesn't feel like it's right there."
Mady's mom was standing right beside her when Bubba bit Mady's face.
"It was a freak incident. I've been around that dog and never seen him act that way."
Bubba's owner, Donna, and Kim have been friends for five years.
"I'm one of her closest friends and her dog, which is her baby, bites my kids. She is just a mess. She is devastated. She calls every 15 to 20 minutes, or texts, to check on Mady. She has come over every night."
Donna is paying for all of Mady's medical bills. As for Bubba, he is being held at the Nebraska Humane Society. He will be put down soon.
"I don't want to see anything bad happen to the dog, but I don't really have any say."
Mady's recovery will take two years to get her back to where she was before the bite. It's been an emotional few days.
"You want to protect you kids and you go to the ends of the earth to protect you kids. She was standing right beside me. I could feel that she was there but I couldn't do anything."
Kim says it was nothing more than a freak accident. She just hopes her little girl will get back to doing what she loves.
"I love singing a lot. My mom said I can go on America's Got Talent. I really hope I can sing again," said Mady.
Mady is looking forward to returning to Hitchcock Elementary school to see her classmates.
