WOWT and Fareway have partnered to honor our heartland families
who are actively serving in the military.
Despite several challenges, the Joseph family of Bellevue makes it clear that they are a team.
Shawn Joseph said, “We joined the military after 911. You know you're going to deploy and you know you're going to fight for your nation.”
Shawn and his wife Amanda have both served our country. Shawn is a sergeant in the United States Army. When their first daughter Kira was born, he was overseas. He said, “I missed her first whole year of life, pretty much.”
Now Shawn works at Stratcom in Bellevue. Amanda was working two jobs and this family had to find a balance.
“Dental appointments, checkups, shots - it gets really crazy. We found the best way was to share a calendar on our phones so we sync it.”
The Josephs' youngest daughter Shaelynn, who is two, was born with Spina Bifida. They wanted her to have great medical care so the family moved to Omaha in January.
Amanda said, “Now she's getting therapy five days a week and she has a good health care. She has Omaha Children's Hospital, so everything here for her is perfect.”
Shawn plans to be by Shaelynn's side. Right now he has no plans to deploy but that presents another challenge for this military family.
“We're living paycheck-to-paycheck when he's not deployed," Amanda said.
But despite money being tight and lots of appointments for Shae, the family finds time to spend together.
Shawn said, “For December, the 24th and 25th are the only two days I don't have anything on the calendar.”
We’re sharing the stories of area military families here on Heartland Homefront on the first Tuesday of each month. Our story with the
Josephs wraps-up two years of introductions to some of our neighbors in uniform. The families featured in our coverage each receive a $250
