Each month we recognize military families for the sacrifices they make for all of us. You're about to meet a husband and wife who both work in the Air Force and at home. They are the parents of a baby girl, just trying to get some sleep.
Elena and Tim Lawmaster are working on tummy time with six-month-old Sophia.
Elena says, "The times we're home together we cherish because there can be a month where we're only home together a week and that's tough. That's tough."
The Lawmasters are both Staff Sergeants in the Air Force. They fly on a magnificant aircraft - the E-4B. And they're on alert, 24/7, doing presidential, secretary of defense and joint chiefs of staff support out of Offutt.
When Elena's not protecting the leaders of our country, she's wearing another hat. She's a devoted mom, trying to get a little sleep.
"Of course we think of our kids when we're gone, especially when we have to travel far away," Elena said. "But once we step back in the house we just get back into mom-and-dad mode. We both do."
Tim and Elena try to organize their shifts so that one parent is home with Sophia at all times. One day, they had to juggle it all at Offutt.
Elena said, "He was standing among his coworkers and I was talking to him about bottles and feedings and diapers. His friends will probably never let him live that one down."
But in the Lawmaster household, it is a true partnership. Whether it's in the skies or simply in the living room.
"Everything I do is for her and my stepson Bridger," Elena said. "And we do it for them and when they're older one day they'll understand why we did it."
We’re going to be sharing the stories of area military families here on Heartland Homefront on the first Tuesday of each month. The families featured in our coverage will each receive a $250 grocery gift card. If you would like to nominate a family for consideration, click here.
