WOWT and Fareway have partnered to honor our heartland families
who are actively serving in the military.
Twins Sydney and Avery Drake love to play with their Aunt Stacy Romero. Their brother Caleb loves to play too but their parents aren't here to see it.
Stacy says, "Their parents left last September and they are coming back this October."
The kids' mom, Staff Sergeant Gena Drake, and their dad, First Sergeant Aaron Drake, both serve in the Army. Right now, they are in Kuwait.
“She said, 'well it's our turn.'" Stacy told us. "'Other people have gone and made those sacrifices, so it's our turn to do it.'”
Stacy is Gena's sister and she has been taking care of all three kiddos since their parents left to serve. She said, “I never knew all the things you have to do with little kids. So I'm learning all of that."
Stacy does all of this and works too. The kids go to day care while she's at work.
"My mom comes and helps so I can do my grocery shopping," she said.
Her dad also steps in to take Caleb to appointments. But for the Drake kids, they always stay in touch with mom and dad.
“We do Skype with them. Probably almost every weekend."
As we looked in on one Skype session, Caleb was pretty proud to do what kids love to do: show off their toys.
“They mostly just kind of play and show them what they have and I follow them around with the computer.” Stacy said.
We’re sharing the stories of area military families here on Heartland Homefront on the first Tuesday of each month. The families featured in our coverage each receive a $250 grocery gift card. If you would like to nominate a family for consideration, click here
