Heartland Homefront - the Albers Family
WOWT and Fareway have partnered to honor our heartland families who are actively serving in the military.

Heartland Homefront
Each month, we honor a special member of our military for their incredible service.

In March, that salute went to Army Sergeant Daniel Albers and family.

Time as a family is precious in the Albers household. Daniel Albers says, "Almost half of my career, I’ve been separated from them."

Army Sergeant Daniel Albers and his wife, Nicole, make it work. They have been married 11 years and have four beautiful kids.

Nicole says, "I just keep busy. The girls are in Girl Scouts and of course, I have a toddler."

Daniel joined the Army in 2004. He said he knew he wanted to serve our country after the events of 9/11.

One of his proudest moments? Daniel said, "When I got promoted to Sergeant, my eldest daughter is actually the one that put my new rank on my chest."

He served in Korea, and recently Iraq.

"There were 18 of us that went down together and 18 of us came home."

Now stationed in Kansas, he still makes the drive any weekend he can to see his kids.

Nicole says, “Usually, he tries to leave after they go to bed so he can say goodbye.”

In 2008, Daniel was honored with Soldier Of The Year. He credits his family, and fellow soldiers, for his success.

Daniel says, "We lean on each other. Especially when times are really, really difficult."

We’re sharing the stories of area military families here on Heartland Homefront on the first Tuesday of each month. The families featured in our coverage each receive a $250 grocery gift card. If you would like to nominate a family for consideration, click here.
