Nick Jedlicka is on a long road to recovery. He was riding in a military vehicle when it hit a roadside bomb. "I broke my left heel, broke my back in six spots, got hit in the face," he said.

Nick doesn't remember the explosion that sent the vehicle flying but he later found out that, "we lost a soldier there in that accident. Luckily, I don't remember. There's four or five days, I don't remember anything."

Sergeant Brent Maher died that day. Three others, including Nick, were injured.

"You live with those guys every day over there and everybody becomes your friend," Nick told us.

Jedlicka was transported to Germany and then sent to San Antonio for treatment. His family had to wait to find out how badly he was hurt. His wife Penny told us, "There was a two-week waiting period before I got to see him."

She was able to move to Texas to be by her husband's side, thanks to support from everyone they know.

Daughter Kailey said, "At first I went with my friends and stayed with them. Then my grandma came out to the house and stayed with us."

Nick was finally able to come home and he wanted to get right back to work. He was awarded the Purple Heart and he told us, "This country gives so much to us. It's just a little bit that we can give back."

Jedlicka still serves in the National Guard and for now, he's able to be home for a while. His son Noah is thrilled about that.

Nick still has more surgey ahead but he knows he's lucky to be alive.

I'm proud of him and the many things he's accomplished," Penny said. "You can just tell it's very important to him and it's what he loves."

Nick is even back to running.

We’re sharing the stories of area military families here on Heartland Homefront on the first Tuesday of each month. The families featured in our coverage each receive a $250 grocery gift card. If you would like to nominate a family for consideration, click here.
