WOWT and Fareway have partnered to honor our heartland families who are actively serving in the military.
Each month, we honor a special member of our military for their incredible service.
Joni Spence is a mother, a widow and a soldier. She is serving our country in Kuwait. We are honoring her service and her family in this Heartland Homefront report.
Life is carefree for Jessica, Michael and Christopher even though their mom, Joni, is away.
Joni is in the Air Force. Right now, she forecasts weather in Kuwait. While she is overseas, her parents are keeping a close watch on her three kids.
Joni's mother, Dianne, says, "They keep really busy. I think they have done real well."
Dianne and Robert Rogers moved back seven years ago to look after the kids. The kids' father, also a soldier, passed away unexpectedly.
"We came to help her out. We knew it would be a long stay since the kids were little."
Joni has served almost 20 years and her kids are proud of her.
Joni's son Michael says, "I think it's kind of cool what she does and I like it when she takes us to where she works."
Meanwhile, her parents are there for every special moment for their grandkids.
Dianne says, "We've gotten to see them grow up."
And although the kids are doing great, they already have big plans about what they want to tell mom when she gets back.
Daughter Jessica says she wants to let mom know, "what I did at school and how I did a lot of stuff."
We’re sharing the stories of area military families here on Heartland Homefront on the first Tuesday of each month. The families featured in our coverage each receive a $250 grocery gift card. If you would like to nominate a family for consideration, click here
