WOWT and Fareway have partnered to honor our heartland families who are actively serving in the military.

Heartland Homefront
Each month, we honor a special member of our military for their incredible service.

In November, it's a young soldier who has faced tremendous battles, both on and off the battlefield.

Adam Koenig has been a soldier in the Army since 2004. Once, in Iraq, his truck was behind a scout vehicle when his friend spotted an IED.

"They ended up finding one and it blew up on him," Adam said. "He got hurt out of the deal."

Adam says that even though these moments were tough, adjusting back to civilian life has been a huge challenge for so many soldiers, including him.

He said, "It's like going through prison and then having to explain to somebody what prison was like."

Adam's release was riding his motorcycle but on Memorial Day this year, he struck a pick-up truck head-on. He was in a coma for a month.

"When I woke up in the hospital I was like, what am I doing here? Basically I have what they call brain damage. I blew out the aortic valve in my heart - blew right in half."

The scars from Adam's crash are still visible and he has to go to physical therapy every day.

"My mom and I will go for walks every day just trying to get the strength back in my leg so I can walk again," he said. But he's thankful that he's alive and still around to take care of his three-year-old girl, Aidyn.

"Be happy that you've got everything that you do," Adam said. "Life will take it away that quick."

We’re sharing the stories of area military families here on Heartland Homefront on the first Tuesday of each month. The families featured in our coverage each receive a $250 grocery gift card. If you would like to nominate a family for consideration, click here.
