WOWT and Fareway have partnered to honor our heartland families who are actively serving in the military.
Each month, we honor a military family in Heartland Homefront. For July, we sat down with a mother who could not be more proud. Both her husband and her son are serving our country.
John and Cara Loken are coming up on their 13th wedding anniversary. They don't take their time together for granted.
Cara says, "My husband was over in Iraq last year for approximately five months and my son is still serving in
That's right. Cara is a military mother and wife. "I'm very pround of both of them," she said.
John is a maintenance officer with the Air National Guard. He says, "I've been deployed a few times. Iraq was the last deployment."
And Christian McClanahan is an Army Specialist. They both admit they have a little fun with the military rivalry.
Last year, John and Christian were both serving overseas. Cara admits their absence took a toll.
"It's very stressful for both of them to be gone and worrying about both of them," she said.
But they make it work. And John and Christian wouldn't trade serving our country for anything.
Christian says, "I'm very proud of what I do. I love my job."
John says, "I've been in a little more than 21 years. And I'll probably stay until they kick me out."
Their loyalty to their country, and this family, helps Cara make it through. "It makes me happy when they're happy," she said. But I still worry when they are gone. That doesn't go away."
We’re going to be sharing the stories of area military families here on Heartland Homefront on the first Tuesday of each month. The families featured in our coverage will each receive a $250 grocery gift card. If you would like to nominate a family for consideration, click here
