Flying lanterns, small paper air balloons powered by a flame, would be illegal in Nebraska under a measure before the State Legislature.
Legislative Bill 1119 would make the sale, possession and use of
the lanterns illegal. Violators would pay a $100 fine.
State Senator Russ Karpisek of Wilber said the lanterns are popular
over the Fourth of July, but are not classified as fireworks.
He said the lanterns are dangerous to homes and crops because
their flight is controlled only by the wind and the flame in the
lantern could cause fires.
Karpisek said he became aware of the potential danger when he
found a burned-out lantern on his porch on July 5.
