Year 'Round Yard Waste Collection

This is the time of year many of us dread, the last few weekends before the yard waste cut-off date.

It can be a time of back breaking labor and long hours in cold conditions, not something many of us look forward to, but there is some good news. We'll still have the same amount of work, but we'll have more time to get it done.

About this time every year you start to see row after row of yard waste bags stacked up on the curb as people hustle to get ready for winter. But the yard waste carrier in Omaha, Deffenbaugh, won't stop collecting after Thanksgiving. We will now be able to get rid of yard waste all year 'round.

The sound heard throughout the Omaha area is of mowers and blowers taking leaves off our lawns and putting them in bags at the curb. Angie Sanders says, "It's good, hard work for you."

And up until this year, it had to be done during the first week after Thanksgiving, but Deffenbaugh is erasing the deadline for yard waste disposal. Crews will now collect it year 'round.

Sanders like the change because she says it will allow more time for all of the hard work. "Tuesday night we got home and worked until dark just to get it all up, but my husband likes to get all the leaves up out of the yard because if they sit through the winter it is much harder to get them up in the spring."

Sanders and her husband and maybe even granddaughter Delanee will still prepare the yard for winter, but a rainy weekend won't put them behind like in years' past.

The change is good news for Jean Hern as well. The work always seems to get backed up in the fall, but now, as long as the weather holds, Mow Mama's Lawns can keep working. "It's kind of nice if there is extra for the people who want their gardens cleaned out or the bushes if the leaves pile up against the house. It's nice that they've extended it."

It won't cut down on the amount of work there is to do, but it will be nice to know that there is some flexibility on when that work has to be done.
