All winter long you could find Abby Siebe-Walles in the water at the Y, putting in the time, swimming her laps, working on her form.

The 8-year-old has shown a tremendous amount of dedication to a sport new to her. "I just started last summer."

Abby and her twin sister have taken to the water like fish. "I just like swimming. I felt that I need to be in the water."

Abby is one of 35 swimmers from the Omaha YMCA teams headed to the regional swim meet in Minneapolis on April 2nd and 3rd.

It's the largest group of swimmers from Omaha to qualify for the regional meet, but the large number of swimmers headed to the competition is no surprise to the coaches who work with them over the winter.

"The kids just had a really great work ethic this year," said Ali Petersen. "We were training really hard and our team as a whole we had larger numbers. We probably had about 30 more kids on the team for the whole season."

At 18 years old, Nate Skidmore is one of the veterans of the squad. This will be his sixth regional and he qualified in eight individual events as well as two relays. Skidmore's experience can help the other swimmers prepare for the competition.

"It is going to be big, it is going to be pretty fast and there are going to be a lot of kids and you've got to be ready for it, get a little nervous."

The team is confident they will do well, but they're not cocky. They know they will be facing some of the best swimmers from the area when they get to Minneapolis, but this team has been successful in the past. They have won the past four state championships for YMCA swim teams.
