Tiger Rock Academy
Tiger Rock Academy Martial Arts told WOWT 6 News it was holding a "Women's Self Defense Class" Sunday, to help women feel more safe following a notable crime spree in West Omaha. The director of the Academy said they hold several each year, and teach the women basic self-defense techniques that would protect them from an attacker.
Nearly 20 women showed up for the event, and learned how to fight off an attacker if they were ever targeted. The women learned how to defend themselves using unique methods the average person would not know. These include pressure points, ways to escape when someone is on top of you, and ways to fight off a person if they grab you by the hair. There were many other basic moves also discussed in the class.
Jeff Dousharm, Director at the Academy, said "Obviously there's been a lot of recent events where people find out about women that have been attacked. Often people have the not me attitude especially here in Nebraska...but crimes here are very often targeted against women and children."
Julie Jorgensen, a mom of two boys, has taken classes at Tiger Rock for about 6 months. She said she first joined for exercise, but realized how much stronger and more confident it makes you. She then decided to take the self-defense class held Sunday.
"Learning some of the techniques today could end can make you a stronger person out there if you're targeted. You safety is really important to take care of especially when you have family," she said.
