Exclusive: Woman Talks About Stealing Sheriff's Cruiser

Hands cuffed behind her back, 23-year old Jessica Lewin says there was no magic slipping out of the handcuffs.

"They were like very loose, loosely put on and my wrists they're not that big," said Lewin in an exclusive interview with Fact Finders inside the Saunders County jail.

A Saunders County deputy had put her in front seat of his cruiser while he investigated Lewin threatening her sister with a knife.

"I want to apologize to my little sister."

But she'll owe a judge an explanation why she got behind the wheel of the running cruiser and started a pursuit. "I don't want the cop car. I thought it was a joke. I really did and, yeah, now I’m here."

An Ashland officer pursued the stolen sheriff cruiser at 90 miles an hour.

Lewin: "He was behind me. He could see me. He knew where I was going."
Reporter: "Were you speeding?"
Lewin: "Well -- it was a Dodge Charger, of course I was speeding.”

On the cruiser radio, Lewin says she heard the officer break off the pursuit on a country road. So in the late night darkness, she pulled into a farm drive.

Before finding a place to hide, she took items out of the cruiser like tuning forks for the radar, a remote for the radar, a camera and GPS.

She took boots from a farm vehicle for her bare feet and climbed into a van where officers found her asleep.

"I was not high and I didn't have drugs," said Lewin.

But theft of a sheriff's cruiser she can't deny. "I drove fast. Yeah! I was enjoying it -- joy riding, I guess." The cruiser wasn't damaged and is back on patrol. Sheriff Kevin Stukenholtz said there will be a review of arrest procedures.

Lewin faces numerous charges including escape and possession of a controlled substance which a Sheriff's report said tested positive for meth.

Lewin's parents have hired Omaha lawyer Mike Fitzpatrick who says his client will be in Saunders county court tomorrow.

The defense attorney tells Fact Finders he'll request Lewin be allowed to start treatment as soon as possible.
