Pottawattamie County Sheriff's investigators are trying to piece together what happened after a vehicle is found in a ditch near McClelland Saturday morning, leaving one of the occupants dead and the other injured.
A witness noticed the vehicle in the ditch around 8 a.m. Saturday near 290th and Idlewood Road and went to McClelland to get help from fire and rescue workers.
21-year-old Nichola Emge and 21-year-old Newberry Wright, both of Oakland, Iowa, were flown by medical helicopter to Creighton Alegent Health in Omaha.
Emge was pronounced dead shortly after she arrived at the hospital. Wright's condition is unknown, but he was conscious and talking at the scene of the crash.
Sheriff's investigators believe that the driver lost control of the vehicle sending it into the ditch. Emge was ejected. It is unclear who was driving. The vehicle is registered to Wright's mother.
