A 31-year-old man has been given 270 days in a Nebraska jail for having more than 56 pounds of pot in his possession.
Elyzah Byers had pleaded guilty to possessing more than a pound of
marijuana. He was sentenced on Tuesday.
A Nebraska state trooper stopped Byers, then of Tucson, Arizona near the Waverly interchange in Lancaster County on March 15. Prosecutors say the trooper found the pot in four duffel bags in the trunk of the car Byers was driving.
Byers' attorney, Mark Rappl, says Byers' crime was a one-time transgression, because Byers needed money following a job layoff in
Wisconsin and a move to Arizona.
Rappl told the judge that Byers has returned to Wisconsin and was back to work.
