Will Procrastination Pay?

Fewer than half of us have wrapped up our holiday shopping, according to America’s Research Group. And many of those holding off are hoping the strategy saves them some money.

Megan Woods, of Omaha, still has some gifts to cross off her list. “I would say, I'm about half way done. So I still have plenty to go," she said.

The latest figures from the Commerce Department showed only a slight growth in November’s sales over the previous month.

"This season is crucial for so many retailers,” said John Deskins, PhD, Associate Professor of Economics for Creighton University. “So if they see the numbers weren't as strong as hoped, then sure, that could mean more sales, more aggressive marketing campaigns in December leading up to the finale."

But Deskins points out, sales have continually grown for the past six months. “Overall, consumer confidence is really vital for an economy in general, and for this economic recovery. So the strong confidence numbers that we've seen in recent months is really good news for the economy," he said.

Some analysts are predicting a last-minute push to move items off shelves, with as much as 60-70% off items like flat-screen televisions and coats, but Deskins says we shouldn’t count on that.
“It's a gamble. There are good opportunities now. If it were me, I might jump on some of those good deals."

For Woods, it’s not about waiting for a better deal. The busy mother said, “They've had good sales, but it's just more so, finding the time." When it comes to shopping for her toddler, Jayla, Woods may not want to waste time.

Analysts say because there are no brand new, "it" toys this season, most retailers are keeping a relatively low supply on a wider variety of toys. That means toys are not likely to see the major last-minute discounts we could see with some other items.
