Whitening Teeth By Oil Pulling

A new trend is replacing whitening strips, special toothpastes, and even some professional whitening treatments.

It's called oil pulling, and the people who do it, swear by it.

Candace Ebbinghaus is one of them, she uses coconut oil for 15 minutes a day, for a month.

It's pretty simple. You take a tablespoon of oil and start swishing. The only hard part is that if you use coconut oil you need to melt it first.

Ebbinghaus says she chews the oil until it is melted and then swishes it around for 15 to 20 minutes. Then she spits it out.

The theory is that the oil, whether coconut, sunflower, or sesame, gets bacteria to cling to it as you swish it in your mouth. Dr. Christine Tengalia gave it a try, she says the jury is still out on whether or not it works. But she did say she would be willing to give it a try.

She does remind people that oil pulling is not a substitute for regular brushing, flossing, and dental check-ups.

Plus, if you try it, spit the oil into the garbage can. If you spit it into the sink certain oils will solidify and can clog your pipes.
