Update: Man Who Killed Dog Faces Added Charge

A Marne, Iowa man cited in the shooting death of a dog has now also been charged with animal abuse.

Collins Cutler was initially charged with firing a gun inside city limits in the shooting that killed a year-old chocolate Labrador retriever named Wrigley that had been playing near his house.

Wrigley was traveling from Denver with owner Stacey Ernat, who told officers that Wrigley and another dog were playing in a yard Monday when Cutler fired a shotgun from about 40 feet away.

Cass County Sheriff Darby McLaren said Cutler told a deputy that he thought he had a right to shoot Wrigley because the dog had come onto his property.

The additional animal abuse charge means Cutler could face up to two years in prison instead of one month in jail.
