The National Weather Service is recognizing the dedication of a Nebraska man who has been dutifully reporting weather observations for more than 33 years.
The Weather Service says John Edgecombe Jr. will receive the agency's John Holm Award for outstanding service.
Edgecombe set up the Geneva, Neb., observation site in August 1978 and has been providing daily temperature and precipitation data since then.
The Edgecombe family has also been recording weather conditions around Geneva since 1919.
Over time, Edgecombe has provided more than 12,000 daily weather reports.
Meteorologist Steven Eddy, who works in the Weather Service's Hasting's office, says having a long history of observations helps scientists understand the climate.
Volunteers like Edgecombe help gather that data.
