Wayne Tornado Recovery: Officials Urge Caution

They're contintuing to pick up the pieces and figure out the puzzle of bringing Wayne, Nebraska back from last week's devastating tornado.

The Nebraska Emergency Management Agency’s field team is working with the Wayne incident management team in support of the local response. NEMA staff is also working with local emergency managers on providing assets to the recovery.

The Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality will coordinate all debris management issues with NEMA and local authorities. Debris management questions may be directed to NDEQ’s Waste Management Section at 402-471-4210.

The Nebraska State Patrol continues traffic control along Highway 35 (Centennial Road and Chiefs Way) as clean-up continues in the affected areas.

The Wayne office of the Department of Health and Human Services was damaged by the tornado but staff has relocated to Norfolk. The office can still be contacted at: 402-375-5050 or 800-608-0712.

If you want to volunteer to help in the recovery or if you need assistance, you should register at (402) 833-1800 or at the Community Activity Center, 901 W. Seventh St. The hours of operation are 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.

In addition to volunteers who are available to help, landowners in need of recovery help are urged to call the hotline to request assistance. Anyone with equipment or services to provide may call and register their availability, as well.

People are urged to make sure that they are protected against tetanus as they work to clean up.
