It is one of the city's biggest attractions, but the thousands of visitors and even some people who live in Omaha find it difficult to get around in the Old Market. That is changing as new signs will help direct both drivers and pedestrians to the attraction they want to see.
Now that the "wayfinding" signage is going up, Troy Davis may not see as many people coming into Fringes Salon and Spa asking for directions or for advice on where to go for a good meal or entertainment.
"We get asked directions a lot, where is this, where should I go eat, where is a good place to have a drink? I love pointing out the different places because I love my neighbors and I think it is a great place to hang out."
Several of the new signs are located just outside Davis' salon and are designed to help visitors easily find the charm of the Old Market. They will also help locals who don't frequent the area often, but have an adventurous spirit.
"We're talking about thousands of visitors plus those once-a-year Omahans who come downtown once a year, hopefully more as we get these signs up, who will benefit from the signs," says Joe Gudenrath.
There will be 44 signs designed for automobile traffic stretching from the zoo to Abbott Drive and another 44 signs dedicated to foot traffic in the Old Market.
The first few signs are up. The pedestrian ones are color coded so people can get to the venues quickly, the ones for automobiles are large and located in prominent places.
The signage is part of a Downtown Improvement District project. The signs were paid for by the district, foundations and a number of private partners.
