Voters Won't Get Chance To Decide On Merger

The merger of county offices will not go before voters. The Cass County Board of Commissioners did not pass the resolution that would have placed the merger of the county assessor and county register of deeds offices on the November general election ballot.

The Cassgram reports Commissioner Dave Nielsen made a motion that stated the merger issue would not go on the ballot. The vote was 3 to 2.

Commissioners voting with Nielsen on his motion: Ron Nolte and Janet McCartney.

There was no discussion before the vote. The merger question had been a topic at a public hearing May 1st. (archives 5/3/12)

“I look at it as a way to control spending,” said Commissioner John Baroni in support of the resolution at that hearing. Nolte and McCartney stated their concerns then about the difficulty voters may have in learning enough about the offices and the effects of the merger to make informed decisions.
