Sarpy County will host a disaster exercise on Saturday, April 2, 2011.

The goal: to keep the skills of our “First Responders” sharp, and to help local agencies work efficiently together in a time of crisis. That teamwork component was identified as a key issue in our nation’s post-9/11 report.

United Way‘s Volunteer Resource Center is looking for 100 participants to play the role of "victims" during the upcoming drill. All volunteers must be 16 years of age or older.

1. Volunteers must report to Papillion South High School, 10799 Hwy 370 at 7 a.m. on April 2, 2011. The exercise will end at approximately 2:00 p.m.

2. Some volunteers will be “painted” with simulated injuries. If you are willing to participate in this portion of the drill, please check the box on the online registration form at www.volunteersolutions.org/omaha.

3. Volunteers should wear old, comfortable, loose-fit clothing and easily removable shoes. Drill organizers recommend that jewelry not be worn and purses/backpacks and other personal items such as cell phones be left at home.

4. Once the exercise begins, volunteers are asked to remain in their roles until its conclusion at 2:00 p.m., barring a real life emergency. Full participation ensures a productive drill.

5. All participants will receive a Certificate of Appreciation during the check-out process.

Before, during and after the event, liquids will be provided for all participants; breakfast and lunch will also be served. Restrooms will be readily available.

For those who have never participated in a disaster exercise, this will be a great opportunity to see our emergency responders at work. The day’s volunteers will play a key part in the preparedness of our community.
