Update: Man Critically Injured In Fire Now In Fair Condition

An Omaha man critically injured in a fire on November 20th is now in fair condition at the Nebraska Medical Center. Neighbors say he may not have made it out at all though if it wasn’t for another neighbor.

Tom Kujawa was pulled out of his burning home near 20th and D by a neighbor.

Neighbor Timothy Robeck lives across the street and saw the roaring flames. “I just pulled the curtain aside and looked out. I got a straight shot at it. It just lit up this whole block.”

Robeck called 911 and headed outside, so did another neighbor. That’s when they heard someone inside the house yelling for help. Robeck says the other neighbor took action. “He didn’t even hesitate, he just headed to that door and started kicking it as hard as he could and the heat was so intense it drove him back for a minute and it was hot.”

Then he tried again. “The second time he grabbed the occupant, sole occupant of the house and just carried him out to the steps to the apartment next door.”

Soon after firefighters arrived Kujawa, was taken to the hospital.

The investigation into what caused the fire is still ongoing, but neighbors believe Kujawa may have been welding at the time.
