A 13-year-old Des Moines boy accused of shooting his friend while they were playing with a handgun will be charged with a misdemeanor.
The teen will be charged Monday with discharging a firearm within city limits as opposed to more serious assault or weapons charges. If convicted, he faces a maximum of 30 days in juvenile detention.
The unnamed boy is accused of firing a .22-caliber pistol at 13-year-old Alec Osborn on the evening of February 23rd at the home of a relative. Police say the boys didn't think the revolver was loaded. Osborn was hit in the shoulder and has since been released from the hospital.
The mother of the wounded boy said the shooting was an accident.
The owner of the gun, 65-year-old Dennis Yohe of Des Moines, shot himself to death the next day.
