Las Vegas casino mogul Steve Wynn joins University of Iowa officials Friday afternoon in Iowa City for the naming of the new Stephen A. Wynn Institute for Vision Research. The billionaire chairman of Wynn Resorts donated $25 million in August for research aimed at preventing and curing blindness.
Scientists say the funding will accelerate their search for breakthroughs in genetic testing for eye disease and gene and stem cell therapies that could one day restore vision. The institute is expected to hire more employees and expand its lab space.
Wynn has retinitis pigmentosa, a disease that causes night blindness and weakness in peripheral vision.
