Unforgettable Trip For Elderly Omaha Woman

A trip to the renew license plates ends with a trip on the sidewalk leading to the government office. An 83 year old woman blames a lip on the concrete between the parking lot and entrance to the Douglas County Treasurer's office on 144th street in Millard.

Laraine Vanderpool said, "I was bleeding because my nose was broken and I fractured two disks in my neck." The fall happened in May when Laraine walked toward the building leased by the county for the treasurer and DMV license renewal station.

Laraine said, "I'm not clumsy, I wasn't looking in my purse I was paying attention to where I was going."

Where the parking lot meets the edge of the curb at the front entranced the building there is about a one inch lip. Six On Your Side taped people coming and going for about and hour. Nobody tripped but some did step on the rise.

County Treasurer John Ewing said the building is leased so any issues with the walk in are the landlord's responsibility. The landlord said the claim sent to his insurance carrier State Farm was denied. The insurance company investigated and found no negligence. The landlord said the lip is not considered a hazard.

Laraine suffered $15,000 in medical bills covered by Medicare. But she says taxpayers shouldn't have to pay for the fall. Her daughter in law has hired an attorney to pursue possible legal action for the trip.
