Before classes start back up on Monday, UNO "let loose" one of the newest additions to the campus.
The Maverick Monument was unleashed at a dedication on Sunday in front of students and faculty. The 8 foot, 1500 pound sculpture was a gift from the alumni association as part of their 100th year celebration.
Jocelyn Russell was asked to design the sculpture about a year ago. The parameters for the giant mascot were to make him tough, yet approachable.
After seeing it unveiled she thinks she hit the right balance.
"Every bit of it was fun," she said. "I didn't feel pushed on any part of it. I got to do all the detail I wanted and it really did feel like a labor of love. It's sort of like having a new baby. You're just wowed about it."
Because of her hard work, UNO welcomed Russell into the family as an official Maverick.
