Turning Trash Into Art

The additional message: it's good to recycle.

This is part of OPPD's Refrigerator Recycling Program.

OPPD will haul away old inefficient refrigerators and pay $35 to do it.

This is the second year of the program and last year more than 2,500 customers turned their old Frigidaires over.

As for the artwork, one called "Big Earth, Small World" by Machell Owens was placed on the corner at 11th and Jackson.

"I wanted to create something that was approachable," she said. "Something that really expressed individuals and how they are connected to each other and the environment. The big message being that each of us is doing our own little part and if we all do our own little part then the sum of what we do is so much greater than what the individual does."

Other artists and their work and where the art is located include Sarah Rowe's "Time Capsule at 13th & Jackson; Charlene Potter's "Under The Pot, A Stand or Not" at 12th & Howard; Paul Konchagulian's "Let's Play House" at 10th & Howard and Liz Verduysse's "Refrigerarium" at 11th & Harney.

They will eventually move to other locations throughout the city.
