The Iowa Department of Transportation is closing the westbound Interstate 80 rest area near Adair for a few days. The rest stop at milepost 80 will close at 9am Wednesday for about 32 hours.
The rest area is being closed to allow for the installation of a wind turbine on the facility’s grounds. Once the turbine is in operation, it will serve as a sculptural element on the site. An interpretive plaque will accompany the turbine as well. The blade and transportation to the site were donated to the state by Siemens Energy of Fort Madison, Iowa.
Siemens has a 600,000 square foot wind turbine blade manufacturing facility in Fort Madison.
Iowa DOT says the state has become a national leader in wind energy industry in terms of jobs and production of actual energy.
