Toys That Are A Cat's Meow

All pets deserve to be spoiled a little, but some are easier to please than others. Dogs love new toys, but finding something to enrich a cat's life might be a little harder to find.

Cat lovers can have just as much fun picking out cool new cat toys. Most cats prefer to hunt specific creatures, so for the mice hunters we've found that Skedaddles are fun. These toys don't have batteries, working off a pull cord like an old-fashioned kids’ toy that will entice your cat to chase.

If you need enrichment when you're not available to play, try the Pounce Cat Teaser. Marshal Maus has four speed settings, goes back and forth and hides and even turns off after 10 minutes. If your kitty loves birds and seems to light up when he or she hears them, you might try the Hide-N-Tweet Crinkle Bag. As your cat engages in play, the little birdie tweets and dances on his elastic while the bag crackles.

If your cat is an "in flight" kind of pet, you might try the Twitch, which suctions onto a bookcase or table and rotates a feathered friend. This toy has a play-while-you-are-away setting that will start and stop multiple play sessions throughout the day.

Are bugs your cat's prey of choice? Tiny Speedsters can offer up big bug fun as they dance across the floor. Or two new Laser Lights can engage those who love darting dots. The dart has two lasers with variable speed settings, adjustable timers and 16 different play combinations. The Bolt has a single laser that generates random patterns, turns on and off in 15 minute intervals and can even project directionally.

String his thing? The Flik will do the work for you, no hands necessary. These toys range from $4 to $40 and you can check them out at the Nebraska Humane Society’s retail store, Animal Outfitters, starting at 1:30 p.m. Sunday. There will be free demonstrations and advice on ways to engage your cat.

The Nebraska Humane Society at 8929 Fort Street in Omaha is open weekends from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and weekdays from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. You can always look up animals and find information at nehumanesociety.org
