A couple was cited for child neglect Wednesday night after the woman's 2-year-old was found inside a parked car with a door open.

Police called to the First National Bank parking lot at North 50th Street and Ames Avenue in Omaha around 6:30 p.m. found 41-year-old Kimberly Deleau on the ground. She appeared to be intoxicated.

As officers called for a rescue squad they noticed a vehicle in the lot with its lights on and the driver's side door open. Inside they found the toddler crying and cold to the touch. Kimberly was taken to Alegent Creighton Immanuel Medical Center and the child taken to the Nebraska Medical Center and placed in protective custody.

Fifty-six-year-old Patrick Deleau, who also appeared to be intoxicated, then approached police. He is the child's stepfather.

Witnesses said the Deleaus went to the nearby Wal-Mart to attempt to return merchandise, but employees asked them to leave. Each went in a different direction, but neither returned to the car.
