To Work from Home, or Not?

Yahoo! made headlines earlier this week when CEO Marissa Mayer mandated all her employees no longer could work from home.

It's a decision that some experts say could benefit productivity but others say it's a bad call.

In Papillion, Katina Gordon splits her time between being a mother and a PR Specialist Albers Communications. She’s been with the company for over a year, working in this type of situation.

However, Gina Ligon, a Collaborative Science and Business Manager Professor with UNO, explained the benefits of commuting to and working in a physical, even traditional office setting.

"From a creativity stand point, if they can spend some time up front, together in a co-located space, where they are defining the problem and spending some time creating a share mental model with the whole team on how to solve things, they can then go out individually and actually do the thinking work that's required to get it done,” Ligon said.

Ligon says from a leadership stand point within Yahoo!, the company decision stood out as “ OK, it’s time batten down the hatches; we’re all in this together,” especially considering Yahoo!'s lacking performance.

Gordon later added, “I believe that working from home has certainly made me more productive, better able to focus, and more responsive for the media and my clients. While the downside is not being able to see my co-workers every day… we are an extremely collaborative group that is able to connect through a variety of means including phone, email and personal meetings. The upside is that I am better able to balance family time and work time from my own comfortable environment.”
