Tire Thieves Strike Again In West Omaha

Tire thieves are at it again, swiping tires from vehicles outside several West Omaha homes.

One of the homes is on 174th & Welch. Homeowner Tim Knust said he walked outside to go to work and he found his Suburban up on cement blocks and all four of the wheels gone. His first thought, “This can’t be happening. I can’t believe it.”

He’s not the only one who started off the morning without wheels. Bill French had the same thing happen to his Jeep. “I was in shock. I woke my wife up and had her come down." French said his kids were screaming, "Daddy your car's on blocks."

Each set of tires is worth thousands of dollars in some cases. While these people are left to deal with their insurance companies or pay up, they’re also wondering, how didn’t they hear anyone do this?

Jim Champion with Charlie Graham Body & Service said the thieves must have the right tools and the right skills. "They're probably like a pit crew. Unfortunately, they're a bad pit crew, but they can get things off very quickly.”

This isn’t the first time tire thieves have hit. Since February at least 25 people have reported to Omaha police this same thing happening to them. It’s a crime spree Channel Six reported first.

Now victim’s like Knust want to get the word out about what’s happening and they hope the culprits will be caught.

We also asked Champion about ways owners can protect their cars. He suggested buying a locking lug nut. You can put one on each wheel and only you have the key. He said that will help to deter thieves, but there still is a chance they can get those off.
