Thousands of people are without power in eastern Nebraska and across parts of Iowa as a powerful snow storm sweeps the Midwest.

The Omaha Public Power District says 38,500 customers in its service areas in eastern Nebraska are without power. The hardest-hit area is in and around Omaha, where 28,000 customers are without electricity. More than 6,700 homes are without power in Sarpy County. The utility says heavy snow and high winds gusting to more than 50 mph are hampering efforts to restore power in many areas.

OPPD says progress is being made on outage restoration, but as some are restored, the weather conditions continue to cause additional problems. Extra crews have been called in, but just like everyone else, it is slow going.

OPPD reports 26 circuits locked out. Officials say they anticipate this being a multi-day restoration event. If you see a downed line, stay away and report it to OPPD at 1-800-554-6773.

In Iowa, MidAmerican Energy reports that more than 31,000 of its customers are without electricity, including 25,000 in the Des Moines area. More than 6,000 customers are without power in western Iowa's Council Bluffs.
