A blackout in downtown Omaha last week kept hundreds of people away from the Douglas County Courthouse. Those who missed their court date and haven't checked in since will get another chance to correct the error before arrest warrants are issued.
The courthouse was closed for a day-and-a-half following an underground explosion near an OPPD vault. At the height of the outage, more than 2,000 people didn't have power.
At first, the court administrator said everyone had until last Friday to check in for the missed court date.
Most people have checked in already.
But for the couple dozen people who have not, court staff will send a letter as a second reminder.
So, failing to appear was understandable.
However, those who skipped their court date have until 1:30pm Friday to appear. Judge Susan Bazis says after 1:30pm, an arrest warrant will be issued for those who failed to appear.
