Omaha police are searching for two suspects in a home invasion and robbery Thursday morning.
It happened just before 7 a.m. at Pacific Winds Apartments near 124th and Pacific streets. “They grabbed whatever they could find and tied her up with a cord to her back,” said 19-year-old Mikaila Buettner.
“I thought it was our roommate leaving to go to work because he had just left and they were watching, waiting for him to leave and then came in,” said Buettner, who was sleeping in her bedroom. Her 17-year-old friend was sleeping on the couch when the men came in through the unlocked second-story balcony door.
“They climbed up the balcony and slid it open and then they held a pillow case over her head and put a gun to the pillow and told her if she moved they'd shoot her. Then one of the men pulled her pants down and sexually molested her.”
The other man started moving out their television and other electronics as well as taking cash and credit cards from the women's purses.
Buettner's 3-year-old daughter and 1-year-old son were right there through it all. “I'm really mad because my babies were there, but I’m more scared for them than anything because I don't want anything to happen to my kids. I don't care about the stuff, but I do care about my kids.”
Witnesses said the men were masked and left the scene in an old brown station wagon. “They left the front door wide open so our neighbor saw her tied up and untied her and then she started screaming, so I went out there and we realized everything was gone.”
Buettner said she will find a safer place to live. “We're moving and getting locks, as many as we can.” She thinks the men were familiar with the layout of the apartment and knew what they were after, only being inside for about 15 minutes.
Her friend was taken to the hospital to be checked. Anyone with information on the robbery is asked to call police at 402-444-5867.
It’s also a reminder to lock balcony doors, even if you are on the second or third floor.
