Teenager Saved By Pastor, Police

A 16-year-old girl enjoying life needed the quick action of a La Vista pastor and police officers to stay alive. She suffered a major heart attack and was revived with CPR and a portable defibrillator.

Kara Siert was attending a youth group fun night at Judson Baptist Church in LaVista Saturday night. Her father Ward said, 'I was told they were playing a game and she was sitting in a chair when she had a big heart attack." Ward Siert said cancer treatment weakened his daughter's heart when she was younger.

The pastor who lives next door rushed over the start CPR and LaVista officers arrived with a defibrillator carried in cruisers. Three brief applications started a regular beat for the teenager according to her father.

Ward said, "She's not out of the woods but the reason she's done as well as she has is because of what was done in the field. So my thanks to them."

Kara remains in intensive care at Children's in Omaha. Her mother Linda said, 'She recognized who her mom is and that just did my heart good today. I have a lot of hope she'll be able to do all the things she loves to do."
