Police have been looking for 17-year-old Caleb Petrick for weeks. He was hard for police to find because he's been living with friends, and riding his bike to burglarize homes. Monday morning, he was apprehended boy the Omaha Police Department.
Omaha police received a call of a suspicious person taking a pitchfork out of a shed near 53rd and P Street. When they arrived it looked like someone forced their way into the home, so they surrounded the place. That's when they found 17-year-old Caleb Petrick hiding in the basement. He was taken into custody without incident.
Petrick was wanted for three burglaries and an attempted one in Ralston, as well as one more burglary in La Vista. He would pull his bike up to the side, break in through a ground level back window, and apparently stole firearms, other goods, and money.
But an incident in Bellevue, after the teen stole guns, is where police kicked their search into high gear. On February 2nd, Petrick allegedly got into a scuffle with security in the parking lot at the Bag N Save on 50th and Harrison Street. Petrick pulled out a gun and pointed it at the security officer. Authorities are glad to see his crime spree end.
"We're breathing a sigh of relief,” said Bellevue Police Chief John Stacey. "Once we connected the dots it was apparent that this individual was escalating at a point where it was becoming dangerous."
Just last week, Tim Dethlefs showed Channel 6 News exactly how a burglar got into his La Vista home, and stole 5 firearms and cash.
"I'm elated. I will be able to sleep easier. I can't think of words to describe how I feel it's just fantastic," Dethlefs explained.
Authorities believe Petrick and another teen were using the stolen guns and shooting a trash can at a La Vista park. They also apparently shot at other property.
The other boy, 17-year-old Zachary Frillman waived his preliminary hearing on Monday. He's facing three felony charges in Sarpy County court.
Even though Petrick hasn't been charged in Omaha, police are holding him so he could be questioned by Ralston, Bellevue, and La Vista police. Petrick does have an active warrant for his arrest in Sarpy County.
