Taxpayers Get Big Piece Of Equpment

County board to buy quarter of a million dollar equipment.. A 3-to-2 vote decided that the lower priced machine will be bought.

The Cassgram reports one bid was for a Caterpillar for $216,806 and the other one was for a John Deere for $237,000. The Caterpillar had a 3-year, 5,000-hour warranty and the John Deere had a 5-year, 5,000 hour warranty. Both are in the 55,000 pound class of machinery.

Cass County Road Superintendent Lenny Thorne said he slightly favored operating the John Deere and mentioned the warranty difference in making the John Deere his recommendation.

The first board vote was on whether the county should buy two excavators now, or buy only one and keep the old one. The vote was 4 to 1 to buy just one this year. Commissioner Ron Nolte voted against the motion. “It’s foolish to keep the old hoe. As it gets older all it is, is iron,” he said.

The discussion then turned to which excavator to buy. Commissioner John Baroni pointed out the $20,000-plus difference. He said he thought it was “in the best interests of the public’s money” to go with the Caterpillar bid. Commissioners Jim Peterson and Janet McCartney voted with Baroni on the purchasing the Caterpillar. Commissioner Dave Nielsen sided with Nolte in voting against the motion.
