Taxpayer Purchased TV Missing

Bright Futures is the name of the youth program but an adult’s bright idea cost one after school center a new television.

A 37 inch flat screen Toshiba was purchased through a federal grant by someone in Omaha Housing Authority more than a year ago. A retailer's receipt shows OHA purchased the $600 television but the agency has no record of where it ended up.

OHA Director Stan Timm said, “We bought it, paid for it and it’s gone. We can’t find it.”
Timm said the television didn’t turn up missing right away because someone within OHA appears to have circumvented the system.

Timm said, “We’ve put in new procedures so that it won’t happen again. Typically these things would go through our purchasing department but this did not.”

A police report was filed. Omaha police told Six On Your Side the case of the missing OHA TV was investigated but there was not enough evidence for a criminal charge.

An Omaha Housing Authority employee had been on paid administrative leave. Since police have closed the case the employee will be allowed back on the job.

Timm said the employee claimed the new 37 inch flat screen purchased with federal grant money had been dropped off at an OHA building and didn’t know where it had gone from there.

The television is still unaccounted for and low income youngsters in the northwest Omaha area won’t have benefit of the big screen for the after school program at 88th and Boyd.
