Suspect's Car Causes Problems For Homeowner

Quick response by Omaha Police catches burglars almost red handed, but has created a myriad of problems for a Benson area homeowner.

As we first reported on First News Live at Four yesterday, two burglary suspects crashed into a home, then took off on foot.

Police sealed off the neighborhood and managed to capture one of the suspects.

While getting criminals off our streets is good news, it's another story for Diane Blakley.

"Its been a quiet neighborhood not too much goes on," she said.

That changed Wednesday.

Police corral one burglary suspect and conduct a search for a second suspect.

The criminals were stopped cold by Diane's house. Their car couldn't make a turn and crashed into Diane's home.

"I couldn't believe it," she said. "I mean, it's so much more than it looks from the outside."

The suspect's car punched a hole in the foundation of Diane's house.

Bricks were scattered around the basement, a closet shattered.

"By nightfall we had to get the hole covered and as you can see, its quite a big hole," Diane said.

But that was just one problem.

"We had to get a plumber to fix the waste pipe because it was cracked,' she said.

So while that work is going on, MUD crews are still working at restoring gas service to Diane's house.

They needed to replace the entire service line, including the meter.

Those repairs should be done today.

Diane's roots in the 100-year-old house run deep.

She was raised in the home, eventually buying it from her parents in 1970, then raising her own family here.

The damage hurts Diane deeply.

"Its very bad," she said. "I'm not sure that its going to be structurally sound, I mean we're going to get an engineer in to tell us that its still okay."

But Diane is determined to not be forced out by misfortune.

"Oh we're staying, she said. "No doubt about it."

Police arrested 20-year-old Derek Stewart for burglary and flight to avoid arrest.

The second suspect is still at large.

As for Diane she's still waiting to hear from her insurance adjuster.
