On the recommendation of the Omaha Police Department, one person was arrested as a fugitive from justice following an incident involving a hit and run with a cruiser.
A call was made to "Help an Officer" just before 7:00 a.m. Monday after three suspects, in a stolen Ford Mustang, rammed into an Omaha Police cruiser at 13th and Vinton.
According to police, officers in patrol in the area noticed the vehicle at a gas pump. It matched the description of a stolen car. Once officers confirmed that it was stolen, they pulled into the lot.
Police reports indicate that at that point, the driver of the stolen car accelerated and rammed the cruiser. The driver backed up and hit a tree. When officers attempted to approach the vehicle, they said the driver, once again, rammed their cruiser.
The suspects fled east after ramming the cruiser into Council Bluffs. A perimeter was set up at the American Inn just north of Interstate-80, at the 24th Street exit in Council Bluffs.
According to Channel 6 News crews at the scene, two men were placed in the back of a cruiser for questioning, but released. A third man was arrested as a fugitive from justice. His name has not yet been released; however, police have said he was a passenger.
The officer involved in the original crash scene in south Omaha appears to be fine.
