Omaha Public Schools is searching for a replacement for Dr. John Mackiel. The search committee still has a lot of work to do. Nancy Huston is chairperson of the committee and says finding a replacement will be a challenge.
"We're looking for a superintendent who is familiar with large city schools, the operation and the challenge that go with the large city schools. Also we have challenges from the diversity of the population and the English as a second language. We have more than 90 foreign languages spoken in the Omaha Public Schools,” Nancy Huston said.
The Omaha Public School District is the most diverse in the state and Huston says the list of candidates will include minorities and women.
“We want you to know that we want all people wherever they're from if they have the background, the training, the experience to do this job to be considered for it,” said Huston.
The School Board wants to have a Superintendent in place for the next school year. The search committee will meet again in November.
