Students Top 100,000 Reading Minutes

Ms. Pinkerton's fifth-grade class at Karen Western Elementary School in Ralston is reaching new heights. As of Thursday, the children have read for more than 108,000 minutes this school year. This happened after a challenge she gave last August, to read for more than 100,000 minutes.

It’s something no class in the school has ever done before. Richelle Pinkerton says the challenge has boosted literacy and interest in reading. “Being able to help them get a little more excited about reading as opposed to this is what you have to do, I have to read 100 minutes. They're coming in and they're like, I read 250 minutes this week.”

Aside from bragging rights, the kids get a pizza party for reaching their goal. Ms. Pinkerton is hoping to break the record next year.
