Students Get Strong Lesson on Distracted Driving

Getting scared straight used to mean seeing how those who are in jail live. These days, it's more about showing the results of bad decision-making.

Drinking and driving and driving and texting are in the spotlight. A demonstration on Friday became more powerful when parents got involved.

It didn’t take an expert to figure out the scenario in the parking lot at Papillion-La Vista South High School. There were two cars, eight teenagers and beer cans everywhere.

Senior Shelby Feick said, “It's really hard to watch because my brother was in a crash in high school and it brings back memories of that. It's crazy how serious it can be and how quick it can happen."

The fake injured were their classmates.

Senior Lauren Neal said, “It puts it into perspective.”

Eight-hundred juniors and seniors got front-row seats.

Senior Olivia Kilgarin said, “I'm sure some don't take it seriously but seeing it in this light might open their eyes a little bit."

Nic Caberos told us, “I hope it hits home with people."

He had a role with no speaking lines. He played the dead teenager.

“I started to cry underneath the sheet,” he said. “You couldn't help it."

That's because besides the first responders the only other adult in the middle of the demonstration was Carey Oswald in the role of grieving mother. She’s actually Nic’s mother.

She said, “I didn't sleep for two days because I kept thinking of what I would do in that instance."

With prom on Saturday night the worst case scenarios won't be far from anyone's mind.

Carey said, “I'm glad they got to see a parent's reaction to what they did. I hope and pray they are affected by that."

While the emphasis Friday was on drinking and driving, the message was that any distraction can have major consequence. Some of the students said texting and talking on a cell phone is an even bigger concern these days.
