The founder of an Omaha church has been honored by having a stretch of road named after him.
Fort Street between 24th and 25th was christened “John E. Mitchell Sr. Street” on Wednesday. He started the Tabernacle of Faith Church in 1976.
“We wanted to remember the legacy of how the journey first began and we can't remember our journey without our founder,” said church member Anika Thomas. “It's unfortunate that he isn't here with us right now, but he is here with us in spirit."
Mitchell's family was in attendance. Under his leadership, the church grew to several hundred members. It's also home to many community outreach programs.
