Omaha Mayor Jean Stothert told audience members at a community meeting Monday in North Omaha that Omaha streets are 50 years behind on repairs and maintenance.

Her comment was in response to a question in regard to disrepair on Ames Avenue.

Stothert said, "It will take a long time to catch up, but now I have some good news for you. In the 2014 budget, instead of taking money out of street repair and maintenance, we are actually putting money in so that we can get more done in all areas of the city."

She added, "From the Department of Roads with the State of Nebraska, we are gonna get an extra 5-million dollars that we can use this summer for repair and maintenance so we can get a lot more done this summer than we have in the past."

Stothert was unsure if repairs on Ames Avenue would be among the summer road projects but invited the questioner to call her office for further information.

She also promised another question-answer session in North Omaha within the next ninety days for a progress report on other issues addressed in the meeting.
