Nebraska State Treasurer Don Stenberg said Thursday he's pondering a run for governor, that it's "unlikely, but possible" he'll jump into the 2014 race.

Stenberg said he previously had planned to seek re-election as state treasurer, but is now considering a run for governor in the wake of Lt. Gov. Rick Sheehy's resignation.

Sheehy had declared that he was running, but resigned from office in the wake of an Omaha World-Herald investigation that found he had placed thousands of calls to women on his state-issued cell phone.

Stenberg, a former attorney general and legal counsel to Gov. Charles Thone, has mounted four unsuccessful campaigns for U.S. Senate since 1996.

He said if he chooses not to run for governor then he'll likely seek re-election as state treasurer.
